Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Predictions for the Planck Surveyor Satellite using the Hubble Volume Simulations

چکیده
We use the billion-particle Hubble Volume simulations to make statistical predictions for the distribution of galaxy clusters that will be observed by the Planck Surveyor satellite through their effect on the cosmic microwave background – the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. We utilize the lightcone data sets for both critical density (tCDM) and flat low-density (LCDM) cosmologies: a ‘full-sky’ survey out to z , 0:5, two ‘octant’ data sets out to beyond z 1⁄4 1, and a 100 square degree data set extending to z , 4. Making simple, but robust, assumptions regarding both the thermodynamic state of the gas and the detection of objects against an unresolved background, we present the expected number of SZ sources as a function of redshift and angular size, and also as a function of flux (for both the thermal and kinetic effects) for three of the relevant High Frequency Instrument frequency channels. We confirm the expectation that the Planck Surveyor will detect around 5 10 clusters, though the exact number is sensitive to the choice of several parameters including the baryon fraction, and also to the cluster density profile, so that either cosmology may predict more clusters. We also find that the majority of detected sources should be at z , 1:5, and we estimate that around 1 per cent of clusters will be spatially resolved by the Planck Surveyor, though this has a large

The effect of point sources on satellite observations of the cosmic microwave background
We study the effect of extragalactic point sources on satellite observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In order to separate the contributions due to different foreground components, a maximum-entropy method is applied to simulated observations by the Planck Surveyor satellite. In addition to point sources, the simulations include emission from the CMB and the kinetic and thermal...
متن کاملForeground separation methods for satellite observations of the cosmic microwave background
A maximum entropy method (MEM) is presented for separating the emission due to different foreground components from simulated satellite observations of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). In particular, the method is applied to simulated observations by the proposed Planck Surveyor satellite. The simulations, performed by Bouchet and Gispert (1998), include emission from the CMBR,...

متن کاملLensing Sunyaev-zel'dovich Clusters
Full-sky microwave surveys like the upcoming Planck satellite mission will detect of order 10 4 galaxy clusters through their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. I investigate the properties of the gravitationally lensing subsam-ple of these clusters. The main results are: (1) The combined sample comprises 70% of the complete sample. (2) It is confined to redshifts 0.2 ± 0.1, and to masses (5 ± ...
متن کاملCosmology with Gtc . a Combined Mm - Optical Galaxy Cluster Survey
The CMB Planck satellite (ESA) will provide a catalogue of ≈ 30000 galaxy clusters (Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect) between redshift 0 and ≈ 2-3 (depending on the cosmological model). This hughe catalogue of clusters will allow detailed studies of the evolution of the cluster population with redshift which will constrain the cosmological model. The identification of the high redshift clusters should...
